Orissa State,known for the Konark temple and as the land of Lord Jagannath,is also the 4th largest among all Indian states in terms of the extent of forest cover, with per Capita Forest of 0.16 ha, which is more than double the national average, the state is naturally the abode of Immense diversity of wild life.

The existing forest cover in Orissa is 48,366 km2. Out of the area having forest cover, 20,196 km2 have crown density of less than 40%, which would require treatment for regeneration and reforestation. The degradation of forest has resulted into the vicious poverty cycle wherein absence of livelihood options encouraged the local people

The main objective of Project Tiger is to ensure a viable population of tiger in India for scientific , economic , aesthetic , cultural and ecological values and to preserve for all time, areas of biological importance as a natural heritage for the benefit, education and enjoyment of the people.
