Animal

Around 38 species of mammals, 161 species of birds, 27 species of reptiles, 4 species of amphibians and 183 species of fishes are found in the reserve. The reserve has significant population of tigers (Panthera tigris), leopards (Panthera pardus), elephants (Elephas maximus), spotted deer (Axis Axis), sambar (Cervus unicolour), chowsingha (Tetracerus quadricornis), barking deer(Muntiacus muntijak), bisons (Bos gaurus) , wild dog (Cuon alpines), sloth bear (Mellursus ursinus), jackal (Canis aureus), giant squirrel (Ratufa indica) and porcupine (Hystrix indica). The Satkosia gorge is the natural habitat of the two endangered species of fresh water crocodilians namely the gharial and mugger. The Gorge has turtles, terrapins, crabs, mollusks and other amphibians. There are 17 tigers, 194 Elephants, 30 Leopards, 78 muggers and 3 gharials in the reserve.
Vertebrates
There are carnivores animals such as Tigers, Leopard, Jungle cat, Civet, Small Indian mongoose, Wolf, Jackal, Stripped Hyena, Wild dog found in Purunakote, Tikarapada, Pampasar, Raigoda, Jillinda and Chhamundia and Kusanga Ranges of the reserve. There are herbivores such as Elephants, common Langur, Sloth bear, Sambar, Chital, Chausingha, Mouse deer, Barking deer, Wild pig, Gaur (Gayal), Fruit bats, rodents like Malabar Giant squirrels, Five striped palm squirrel, Common hare and Porcupines in the sanctuary.

Areas like Labangi, Tulka and Raigoda are prime habitats for wild animals. Elephant herds in large numbers are seen in Raigoda, Kuadoli, Halua nalla, Nandini nalla, Hatigirija, Tulka, Baghmunda, Katranga, Purunakote, Chhotmunda, Kuru, Labangi, Karadapada, Majhipara forest blocks of the sanctuary. Quite a number of animals are noticed in the forests of Purunakote, Raigoda, Tikarapada and Pampasar Ranges. Many animals are sighted in water holes like Kantarsingha, Hatigirija, Kandhaida, Kadalikhola, Takarsingha, Buchhundabhogra, Nadapathar, Ranibandha, Paintiri and Khajurinallia.

Reptiles
The important reptiles in the reserve are the Gavialis gangeticus (Gharial) and Crocodylus palustris (Mugger). Gharial is the sole member of family Gavialidae and only found in Indian sub-continent. The Gharials are endangered species and their population in the wild is reduced to 3 individuals. The monitor lizard and Chameleon are quite common. The common snakes found in the sanctuary are Tampa (Naja Naja Kaouthia), Naga (Naja-Naja-Naja), Saw Scale riper (Echi Carinatus), Chandra boda (Viper russelli), Chiti – common krate (Bungarus caeruleus), Rana-Banded, Krait (Bungarus fasiatus), Pani Dhanda (Natrix piscator), Bamhuni (Nabix stolata), Dhamana (Ptyas musosus), Domundia (Eryx stolata), King cobra (Ophioptagus Hannah) and Ajagara (Python molurus)

Fish
Visitors can enjoy boat rides on river Mahanadi or take a trek through any of the designated nature trails. One can closely experience the wilderness through elephant rides or sight wild animals on a watch tower.
